Discussion:
Advice on possible malware affecting multiple sites on same server

If this isn't appropriate for this list, I apologize, but I'm not sure
where to turn and I know there are experts here. Any advice will be much
appreciated.

I have a shared server with about 20 WordPress sites. Yesterday, on one
site, an issue appeared in the Media Uploader: the selection of sized
images is created, but does not show up as available for inserting. Only
the largest size shows up.

I troubleshot that site's issue, but then gradually discovered that the
exact same issue is appearing on every one of my WordPress sites.

I have tried de-activating all plugins and reverting to the default theme,
and the issue persists. The sites don't have anything in common except for
WordPress itself and being on the same shared server.

What is the best way to proceed in this situation? Thanks very much in
advance for any help.

Best,

Patty

Can you check if the other sizes are actually created on the server? Go to
the uploads( /wp-content/uploads/mm/yyyy ) directory and see if you get
multiple files with similar names for each upload that you make. It's
possible that the other sizes are simply not created(I'm not sure what
would cause that but I assume it could be some server configuration issue).

That's the first thing I can think of.

Ok, and thank you - but it seems like there must be something affecting
*all* of the sites, doesn't it?

An update on this: I figured out that the problem is *only* with GIF
images. It happens 100% of the time with GIFs, and zero with other image
files. And it happens on every site on my hosting account. A colleague
suggested that I ask my host if they could check on the configuration of
the GD Library, which could cause something like this, he says. I've asked,
so will see what they say.

Thanks again, all - I'll let you know if I figure this out.

Check the color settings of the image file.

I've seen installs of GD that are unable to cope with indexed color
images, changing them to 24 or 32-bit RGB images fixed the problem.
This most commonly appears when the images are black and white, but
any indexed color image can cause the issue.

Converting the images to PNG files with full-color before uploading
them is probably the simplest solution.

Hm, really, ok. I can certainly do that. Might be a problem for my clients
at times, but then again, nobody's using GIFs all that much anyway.

So that would be caused by settings on the server, sounds like.

Thanks, very helpful -

Yes and no... it's caused by the particular version of GD running on
the machine and the support it has for various images. GD is an older
image library.

WordPress 3.6 will support an alternate library called "ImageMagick",
if your server has that installed and enabled. However, you may not
have that and thus won't see any change if not.

You might check to see the admin of that server did an update. If
PHP got recompiled it may have been done with different configuration
flags or a different set of libraries.

Ah, ok. I'm waiting to hear back (from HostGator..) - if they say they have
no clue, I'll raise that question. Thanks, Mark.

Nikola, thank you - they *are* created - I can see them on the server - but
they don't appear in the drop-down list for insertion.
